In the fight to get pentacles approved for headstones of Wiccan and Pagan veterans there was a surprise development. The state of Nevada got a legal opinion through the state’s Attorney General’s Office that concluded that federal officials have no authority over state veteran cemeteries. As a result the State of Nevada has decided that they will provide as memorial plaque for Sgt. Patrick Stewart with a pentacle. Thus one Wiccan vet has his wish. But that leaves the other widows still fighting the VA for the right of their Wiccan dead to have the same right. So the battle is not yet over. For all the rest of our Wiccan vets we need to continue to fight until the VA gives in and allows all Wiccan vets to have pentacles on their head stones. The problem is not just a matter of discrimination against Wiccan vets. The problem is that the Veterans Administration has no right to decide what religious symbol is acceptable or not, according to the United States Constitution. |
